Dec. 23: Making a return to the political spectrum after being in the wilderness for over a month, former rural development and panchayat raj minister Shobha Karandlaje on Wednesday made an impassioned appeal for Endosulfan victims of Puttur and Belthangadi.
Ms Karandlaje resigned from the Yeddyurappa ministry recently as part of a peace formula brokered by the BJP leadership between the Reddy brothers and the Chief Minister. This seemed to have spurred her to come to the rescue of those affected by the dreaded pesticide, Endosulfan. And, when she did, she was assured by none other than Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa that he would take up the issue of a ban on the pesticide with the Centre .
“The menace posed by Endosulfan is so serious that next year may have to be declared as the year of the mental retarded and the next decade that of the physically challenged,” Ms Karandlaje said in the Assembly on Wednesday.
Her question was posed to to revenue minister Karunakar Reddy but in his absence, the Chief Minister took up the issue in right earnest.
Villagers in Puttur and Belthangadi where Endosulfan is sprayed on the cashew crop, are in the grip of an incurable illness with the victims losing control over their limbs. From 1980 to 2000, as many as 37 physically challenged people have died in these two villages while 200 people have been left with a permanent disability.
Ms Karandlaje wanted the state government to increase the monthly pension for the victims and also take up the issue with the Centre. Mr Yeddyurappa, concurred with her and assured her that he would do the needful.
